The story

Medford Township is revising its redevelopment plan for the former library building at the corner of Allen Avenue and Main Street. The new version would allow three single-family homes on the site, according to the township planner's presentation at council's September 22 meeting.

The township first asked developers for plans with business space on the first floor and two residential units upstairs. The planner said concerns about limited parking were part of the reason for the change. When Medford picked the rest of Main Street for redevelopment, the library was left out because it was zoned for public buildings, parks and schools.

The plan sets new zoning for the site, called the Allen Avenue Redevelopment Area, with rules for how the homes look. Renderings shown to council had garages inside the homes, porches facing Main Street, and driveways kept away from the intersection. The plan goes to the planning board next, and the planner expected a second reading and public hearing at council's October 6 meeting.

The rezoning alone does not approve construction. The township would still have to hand the land to a developer, and the planning board would still have to approve how the land is divided or laid out.
